As the Los Angeles fires rage on, I can't help but reflect on the places that shaped me. Once vibrant and full of memories, my high school and childhood neighborhood are engulfed in flames. Many of my friends have lost their homes—or their parents' homes—and the stories are heartbreaking. These fires have destroyed physical landmarks and left deep emotional scars, shaking the foundation of countless lives.

In times like these, emotional intelligence (EI) becomes a critical tool—a guiding light that helps us navigate uncertainty, foster resilience, and create meaningful connections. But beyond personal benefits, EI also provides significant advantages in business, empowering leaders and teams to remain focused, make sound decisions, and build trust even under intense pressure.

Emotional Intelligence in Action

EI enables us to shift from being run by our emotions and fears to cultivating calm, clarity, and presence. Emotional intelligence helps us pause, reassess, and respond intentionally when fear and uncertainty threaten to derail us. This skill is vital not only for personal resilience but also for professional success.

A Personal Story of Resilience

I'll never forget the day two massive Sikorsky helicopters began circling our neighborhood, two days after the Palisades fire started. Though the fire didn't directly affect us, our home had become a refuge for my brother—who had been evacuated—and friends who had been without power for days. We tried to find normalcy, sitting outside, sharing stories, and soaking in the sun.

Then the sirens came. Minutes later, our phones blared with a Level 1 alert, instructing us to prepare to evacuate due to a new blaze—the Kenneth Fire. Fear was palpable, but I knew I had to act. I gathered essentials, ensured my family and guests were ready to go, and focused on what needed to be done.

While walking through the neighborhood, I noticed many of my neighbors were struggling. Some were trying to manage scared young children, while an elderly neighbor appeared confused and unsure what to do. I could step in and help by managing my own emotions and offering a calm and steady presence. I reassured those who were panicking and provided clear guidance to those who needed it.

At that moment, I realized how emotional intelligence can extend beyond ourselves. It can create ripples of calm and clarity that positively impact others. Whether guiding a team through a crisis or helping a community during a disaster, managing our emotions allows us to show up as leaders who inspire trust and confidence when it matters most.

Mastering Key Moments

In my work with leaders and teams, I teach emotional intelligence using theKey Moment Response Chain model. This framework helps individuals recognize and manage their emotional reactions to triggering events.

Here's how it works:

  1. Key Moment: A triggering event that challenges us or demands a response.

  2. Meaning: Our perceptions and paradigms shape the narrative we assign to the event.

  3. Feelings: The emotions and physical sensations triggered by the moment, such as fear, anger, or tension.

  4. Behavior: Our actions in response can either strengthen or weaken us.

From there, we choose one of two paths:

By slowing down the response chain and interrupting automatic reactions, we can choose the pathway of self-mastery—allowing us to lead with clarity and purpose.

This process benefits individuals but has a transformative impact on teams and organizations. Emotional intelligence inspires and motivates everyone involved by fostering trust, collaboration, and resilience, even in high-pressure environments.
