As the Los Angeles fires rage on, I can't help but reflect on the places that shaped me. Once vibrant and full of memories, my high school and childhood neighborhood are engulfed in flames. Many of my friends have lost their homes—or their parents' homes—and the stories are heartbreaking. These fires have destroyed physical landmarks and left deep emotional scars, shaking the foundation of countless lives.
In a business context, leaders with strong EI can:
Make better decisions under pressureby staying calm and present.
Improve team dynamicsby fostering trust and clear communication.
Inspire confidence and motivationeven during challenging circumstances.
In my work with leaders and teams, I teach emotional intelligence using theKey Moment Response Chain model. This framework helps individuals recognize and manage their emotional reactions to triggering events.
Key Moment: A triggering event that challenges us or demands a response.
Meaning: Our perceptions and paradigms shape the narrative we assign to the event.
Feelings: The emotions and physical sensations triggered by the moment, such as fear, anger, or tension.
Behavior: Our actions in response can either strengthen or weaken us.
From there, we choose one of two paths:
The Pathway of Self-Mastery: Embracing reality, taking responsibility, clarifying vision, and acting with integrity.
The Pathway to Survival: Resisting reality, disowning responsibility, reacting from fear, and losing clarity.
While we cannot control wildfires, economic downturns, or the actions of others, wecancontrol how we respond. Emotional intelligence empowers us to rise above fear and uncertainty, embracing calm, clarity, and purpose. It's a skill that drives personal and professional growth and gives us a sense of control and confidence, enabling us to navigate challenges and build resilience in adversity.
If you're ready to develop your emotional intelligence further, I invite you to join my free EI minicourse. This course will explore practical tools to build resilience, foster clarity, and lead with greater impact—at home or in the workplace. You'll learn how to recognize and manage your emotional reactions and how to choose the pathway of self-mastery in challenging situations.
